VocsiBox®

Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO) of landfill gas with low calorific value and/or process air from mechanical-biological waste treatment plants (MBP)

In the treatment of low calorific value gas and MBP process air VocsiBox® combines the simplicity of biofilters with the efficiency ratio of high-temperature combustion.

VocsiBox® is the preferred solution for many applications: It produces low operating expenses and reduces greenhouse relevant emissions by 90 per cent. Exhaust emissions fall much below the TA-Luft limiting values.

VocsiBox® also meets the new German emission requirements for process air from mechanical-biological waste treatment plants. This has clearly been proven by a BMBF research project in the year 2002 carried out at the Bassum waste treatment plant.
The research project at the Bassum site provides excellent proof of the successful application of VocsiBox® in the treatment of process air from MBP plants. A large-scale facility for 50,000 m³/h started operation early in 2003.
VocsiBox® works according to the priciple of regenerative thermal oxidation (RTO). Combustion is flameless and noncatalytic. The substances contained in the gas oxidize inside the reactor while the gas is flowing across a hot reaction bed at temperatures of about 1,000°C.

After the starting phase the unit will soon operate autothermally even if the energy content of the process air is very low. Autothermal operation means that no extra energy needs to be supplied to keep the process going. Propane or biogas are frequently used in the event that auxiliary firing is necessary, e.g. for the treatment of contaminated process air.

VocsiBox® in comparison to other current treatment processes

In comparison to biofilters VocsiBox® excels by virtue of a high degree of methane reduction. Reliable performance control is possible independent of the quality of the crude gas.

When compared to 3-bed facilities a major advantage of VocsiBox® is the minimization of nitrous oxide. This is due to the high temperatures applied in the process. Less requirement for insulation and a smaller number of movable parts are further benefits that underline the simplicity of the VocsiBox® process.

Individual design

It is possible to design a VocsiBox® tailor-made for local requirements.

If, for instance, landfill gas is available to serve as cost-efficient auxiliary gas for the treatment of MBP process air the VocsiBox® reactor will be designed with a smaller thermal efficiency ratio. This reduces the cost of investment.

Should it be necessary, however, to use propane an an auxiliary gas the unit will be optimized in a way to guarantee maximum thermal efficiency and to keep the running cost low.
